Orchestra

The Ranchview High School Orchestra is the largest musical organization at Ranchview and it continues to set the standard for superior performance on a yearly basis. Students involved in the orchestra learn skills such as cooperation, critical thinking, teamwork, self-direction, time management, organization, and an appreciation for artistry and beauty, all while participating in the flagship organization on campus.

Pathways

Concert Orchestra 1,2,3,4

Concert is one of the sub-non-varsity orchestras at RHS. Membership is by audition only. Concert Orchestra consists of students in all grade levels. Concert is a competing orchestra of advancing students. Basic skills are emphasized, but there may also be opportunities to explore shifting, vibrato and reading complex meters and keys. This group typically plays music that aligns with grades 1-3 on the UIL list.

Camerata Orchestra 1,2,3,4

Camerata is also one of the sub-non-varsity orchestras at RHS. Membership is by audition only. Camerata Orchestra consists of students in all grade levels. Concert is a competing orchestra of intermediate students. Basic skills are reinforced, but there are opportunities to develop skills such as shifting, vibrato and reading complex meters and keys. This group typically plays music that aligns with grades 2-3 on the UIL list.

Philharmonic Orchestra 1,2,3,4

Philharmonic is the non-varsity orchestra at RHS. Membership is by audition only. Philharmonic Orchestra consists of students in all grade levels. Philharmonic is a competing orchestra of students with solid basics and some knowledge of advanced techniques. The level of technique required to play in this orchestra is higher than in Concert or Camerata; the music sometimes requires shifting and a greater skill in processing complex meters and keys. This group typically plays music that aligns with grades 2-4 on the UIL list.

Symphonic Orchestra 1,2,3,4

Symphonic is the varsity (top) orchestra at RHS. Membership is by audition only. Symphonic will consist of mostly students in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades, but can also include advanced 9th grade students. The most advanced techniques and music will be taught and learned in Symphonic. Shifting is necessary for most of the music, and complex rhythms and meters are very common. Symphonic members are required to participate in the All-Region process and to learn a solo piece to perform at Solo and Ensemble. The top players may also choose to prepare for All-State auditions. This group typically plays music that is grade 4 or higher on the UIL list. A small, elite group of Symphonic Orchestra members also comprises the RHS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, which represents the orchestra publicly at events beyond the typical schedule of competitions and concerts.
