More Than 150 CFBISD Graduates Attend CFBISD's CCMR Transition to College and Career Events

More than 150 CFBISD graduates from the classes of 2021 and 2022 attended the College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) Department’s two Transition to College and Careers events in June at the Nancy Watten Technology and Event Center.

During the events, graduates could visit with college partners, listen to informational presentations, and meet with local organizations for various postsecondary opportunities. The events were created to serve both college and career-going students.

For college-bound students, the goal was to remove barriers for students who had applied to college, so that they actually enroll in the fall. Many Dallas County Promise partners were on hand to aid students in registration and financial aid. And, free Meningitis shots were available for students who need the vaccination to attend college in the fall. In addition, the CCMR Department gave presentations on Adulting 101, Enrollment/Registration, and Financial Aid/Final Checklist so that students would have last-minute tips before heading off to a college or university.

For career-bound students, the goal was to connect students to local employers and resources. The department recruited companies that were: 1) hiring right now, 2) offered internship/apprenticeship opportunities (paying students as they trained/learned the job), 3) delivered educational resources (career help, job skills, budgeting, etc.), or 4) provided services they might need as an adult (dental, insurance, etc.). Community employers were on hand to share local opportunities with graduates. Nine of those companies were actively seeking employees with a high school diploma. Twelve other companies offered apprenticeship opportunities for students to get paid while learning the industry. Service providers such as Metrocrest and the Workforce Commission were on hand to help remove additional barriers to employment.

The CFBISD Educational Foundation provided an ImpactNow! Grant for transportation at the Educational Services Division Complex (ESDC) located at 1820 Pearl Street to take students to and from the events.

The Transition to College and Career events continue to move the CCMR team toward providing comprehensive college and career support for students, even after they receive their diplomas.
