Ranchview HS Boys Swim Team Competes at UIL State Meet

Ranchview High School Wolves boys swimming made history this past weekend, Feb. 9-10, 2023, as they competed in the inaugural 4A UIL State Meet at the Josh Davis Natatorium & Bill Walker Pool in San Antonio.    

The team, consisting of Cody Le, Diego Ramos, Laurence Dean, Julian Huddleston and Sebastian Doan, came back with a top 10 finish. 

“This team represented their school with pride and honor,” said Barry Ray, Ranchview High School swim coach.    

The final results were:

  • The 200-meter medley relay ended with a seventh place finish in finals. The team, Cody Le, Diego Ramos, Laurence Dean and Julian Huddleston, started things off with a strong performance and new school record going into finals at fifth.
  • Laurence Dean had a top 16 finish in the 200-meter individual (200 IM) and a 12th place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.
  • Cody Le broke his own record and finished fifth in the 100-meters butterfly (100 fly) and also broke his own record in the 100-meter backstroke finishing fifth in the race.
  • Diego Ramos finished 14th in his 100-meters breaststroke.    
  • The boys 400-free relay, consisting of Laurence Dean, Julian Huddleston, Diego Ramos and Cody Le, placed ninth overall.

“The big race of the weekend was the boys 400-free relay who placed ninth overall but came from behind to win the B Final and set a new school record by over five seconds,” Ray said. ‘This has been an amazing season with new experiences. A special thank you to our principal, Dr. Skruch, for showing support and cheering our athletes on. They worked so hard for this and came out on top.”

Ranchview Region Results

In order to compete at the State meet, the team had to first compete in the Region 2-4A Meet. The team, consisting of Cody Le, Diego Ramos, Laurence Dean, Julian Huddleston, Sid Sririam, Daniel Kim, Bart Barata, Jaswanta Sahu, Asher Odiong and Sebastian Doan, were the new 2-4A Regional Champions. 

Boys Regional results were:

  • The 200-meter medley relay and the 400-free relay of Cody Le, Laurence Dean, Diego Ramos, and Julian Huddleston were Regional Champions in both relays. The 400-free relay also broke a school record. 
  • Cody Le was the individual Regional champion in the 100-meters butterfly and runner up in the 100-backstroke.
  • Diego Ramos placed second in the 100-meters breaststroke and third in the 100-meters butterfly.
  • Laurence Dean was Regional Champion in the 500-freestyle and set a new school record. He also placed third in the 200-meter individual (200 IM).
  • Julian took sixth in the 50-freestyle.
  • Daniel Kim came in eighth in the 50-free and 100-free.
  • Sebastian Doan placed sixth in the 100-free and fourth in the 100-breaststroke.
  • Asher Odiong and Sid Sririam came in fifth and fourth in the 200-freestyle.
  • The 200-free relay of Bart, Julian, Sebastian, and Daniel Kim came in fourth.

Girls Regional results were:

  • The girls took fourth place. 
  • Rose Dowell was the top finisher with third place, and her best time, in the 100-freestyle 
  • Paris Huynh placed fifth in the 200-freestyle.   
  • Anika Arupransad and Mabel Dowell competed in the 50-freestyle finishing seventh and sixth place.

“Congratulations, again, to our Wolves as they competed and swam very hard in the pool,” Ray said. “They swam their way to State!”  

Newman Smith Region Results

  • The girls medley relay, consisting of Olivia Keith, Hannah Brown, Ali Monzon, and Thi Nguyen, qualified with a best time, and dropped their time even more on the second day of finals for a best time of the season.
  • Zach Smith made his individual debut qualifying in both the 200-freestyle and 500-freestyle. At Regionals, he had a best time in the 200-freestyle and a top eight finish in the 500-freestyle.
  • The boys 400-freestyle relay finished 12th. Cooper Cherney led off the relay with a best time in the 100-freestyle, and Soahum Golhar, Yahir Aguilar and Zach Smith finished off the race.

“What an amazing way to end the Newman Smith swim season,” Ray said. “It was a tough battle just making it to Regionals as our athletes competed against four of the strongest Frisco teams at the district meet. But, they swam hard and came out on top. Congratulations to all who competed!”
